My MR2 has developed a problem that I’m having trouble diagnosing.
It sounds like a knocking coming from the engine. Curiously, it only happens from about 2000-3000 RPM, and only from about 20-40% throttle. And only when the engine is well-warmed. And it doesn’t happen when the spark lead for cylinder 4 is unplugged. But it does happen in every gear including neutral.
The car seems to drive well enough. I’m scared that it’s something very serious - when I first noticed it I was driving fairly hard, and I pulled over and checked to find it was very low on oil.
Will be taking it to a mechanic soon, but any information in diagnosing and/or investigating this would be much appreciated. After

I can’t handle another big mechanical issue #gunnaleaseacamry.

Misfire in cylinder 4? How does your distributor cap look? Have you tried to use a stethoscope to isolate the noise?

there’s a couple of things you could do to help isolate the issue further, swap the plugs with another cylinder, swap leads with another etc
(obviously completely remove the lead from the dizzy and the plug and switch with another, make sure you take note of where they go so you can put them back)
could be a dirty dizzy or injector. if it was bearings or mechanical you’d probably still hear it with the leads unplugged.
Though it sounds like your MR2 has a serious lack of 3SGTE and needs to be sorted asap.

We have swapped the dizzy. Do you really think it could be a sparking issue causing these symptoms?
It’s definitely missing a T.

We have replaced the distributor cap to no avail.
We tried some ghetto stethoscoping but it didn’t tell us much. It doesn’t seem to be coming from anywhere specific like the heatshield.

it could be,without hearing it myself it could also be a whole lot of other things. So it always pays to start with the simple checks and work your way through them.
My goal is to upgrade to a 2GRFE next year, if you’re still about
when
if I finally do it I’ll drop you a line to sell my 3SGTE and trans. (cause I’ll get a camry E153 for the ratios)

Yeah you’re right.
I’m not really in the business for a turbo engine. Unless mine is totally stuffed. In that case I’ll track you down.
Ps. Is that a 6 speed? I’d kill for a 6 speed.

are you saying you don’t want extra heat, complexity and a worse exhaust note? are you crazy?
Nah they’re all 5 speeds, the Camry E153 is almost identical to the MR2 one except for a different final drive and the shifter mechanism is mirrored as it’s obviously in front of the drive instead of behind.
